Welcome
[edit]Hello Neep, welcome to Wikipedia.
You might find these links helpful in editing pages or creating new ones: Tutorial, How to edit a page, Naming conventions, Manual of Style. You should probably read our policies at some point too.
But don't feel you have to read every policy document before you do anything. Dive in, be bold in editing, and if you do anything wrong, someone will be quick to correct it and let you know (hopefully, politely!)
If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! -- ALargeElk | Talk 10:51, 30 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Copyright
[edit]Hi Neep, the image you uploaded of TokyoSetagayaMcDonalds has a copyright notice on it (on the actual image). If the author has indeed okayed its use in wikpedia, then do you think the copyright notice should be removed from the image? Cheers. Moriori 02:17, Jul 30, 2004 (UTC)
I am Paul Vlaar, the person that made the photo, so there is no need to remove either the photo or the copyright notice. Thanks for the heads-up, I will make it more clear that it is me, myself and I who uploads my own photos, in future :)
--Neep 02:21, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Hello Paul. I wasn't suggesting the image be removed. However as anyone is permitted to freely use/reproduce Wikipedia information, then no text or image should have a copyright notice on it. No? I mean, yes? Cheers Moriori 02:30, Jul 30, 2004 (UTC)
I don't think it's a matter of Wikipedia. It's a matter of whatever license I have put on my photos, which is the GFDL in this case, which does not disallow the use of any copyright notice. In fact it says:
2. VERBATIM COPYING
You may copy and distribute the Document in any medium, either commercially or noncommercially, provided that this License, the copyright notices, and the license notice saying this License applies to the Document are reproduced in all copies, and that you add no other conditions whatsoever to those of this License. You may not use technical measures to obstruct or control the reading or further copying of the copies you make or distribute. However, you may accept compensation in exchange for copies. If you distribute a large enough number of copies you must also follow the conditions in section 3.
You may also lend copies, under the same conditions stated above, and you may publicly display copies.
In other words it says that there in fact an obligation on any further user of the document, to preserve to copyright statement.
Besides, I am the author of this photograph, if I want to contribute it to Wikipedia or any other place, so I can decide what copyright is on the photo or not and what is displayed as such. If I would remove the copyright notice from the image itself, that would not change _anything_ with regard to the copyright, anyway. I don't think it's in anyone's place to tell me what license to use, since I am the contributor of this specific photograph.
At Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags there is also no mention of disallowance of imaged copyright tags, in fact, it promotes the proper copyright tagging in a number of sentences:
It's kind of obvious, but if you tag an image as requiring attribution, please specify who needs to be attributed!
Where Wikipedians have taken the images, they should have a bit of fame! Putting some text on the image description page that they took it themselves, and they license it under the GFDL, is a good way to do that.
I'm really not at all in violation of any kind of Wiki ideology here, correct me if wrong and please cite where you think your rationale comes from, as at this point I don't think your 'argumentation' holds up very well. Read the GFDL some time, it does not mean copyright should 'disappear' from documents, but rather, due credit where appropriate and proper maintenance of that, like in the GPL.
--Neep 03:24, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)
- Hey, hold your horses matey. I have no 'argumentation'. I am not telling you what licence to use. I asked a simple question but obviously didn't make it clear. Can I put it another way? If someone downloads your image from wikipedia and publishes it, say, in a print encyclopedia (and acknowledges wiki as source), can you scream "hey that's my copyrighted photo so hand over a bucket load of dollars?". I'm asking because I don't know the answer.Moriori 23:38, Jul 31, 2004 (UTC)
No, since the GFDL doesn't allow me to do that, AFAIK, which is the license that I have applied to my photos in the form that they appear here on Wikipedia. All I want with that tag on the actual larger image is some credit for the photo I made. Some people argue that when making the comparison between text and photos published here, it would be bad to leave copyright tags like that, since for text it would mean that every bit of documentation would then be filled with them. I strongly believe that photographs are in almost all cases are the work of 1 person and that it's pretty much impossible or just the same not done to directly add or alter a photograph (people would rather just replace the whole photo) here on Wikipedia.
So, I think the direct comparison of text and photos is not really valid in that way.
Anyway, to further clarify my stance on my own photos and their usage: my only wish is for people to see and use my photos here and wherever they want, and that they keep the credit for it (me) intact. Of course, since the GFDL allows for alterations, they can simply erase the tag from the bottom, but they should still credit the original author for the photo, right? By putting that tag on, I've simply made that easier to do.

Thai Coke
[edit]Hi, Neep, I hope you don't mind I cropped and edited your Thai Coke can. I wanted to make the can show up better in the Coke article thumbnail. -- ke4roh 02:45, Aug 26, 2004 (UTC)
- Hi Ke4roh. No problem with that crop, I was kind of thinking about doing that myself but I was too lazy for it :) So thanks!

Unverified images
[edit]Hi! Thanks for uploading the following image:
I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use {{gfdl}} if you release it under the GNU Free Documentation License, {{fairuse}} if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know at my talk page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much. [[User:Poccil|Peter O. (Talk, automation script)]] 03:20, Dec 10, 2004 (UTC)
P.S. You can help tag other images at User:Yann/Untagged_Images. Thanks again.
- It's fixed. Thanks for the notice. --Neep 09:43, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Non-free images
[edit]Hi,
Thanks for uploading images to Wikipedia. You've licensed your images for non-commercial use only. Unfortunately that restriction makes the images unusable on Wikipedia, which requires that copyright holders license their work under a free license such as the GFDL. Would you agree to relicense your images under the GFDL? They'll be deleted sooner or later otherwise. Thanks, Rhobite 04:03, Feb 20, 2005 (UTC)
- Hi Rhobite, could you please cite the exact place on Wikipedia where it is stated that the only license that once can choose to publish images under on Wikipedia is in fact the GFDL? I was under the impression that one can opt for any kind of license that implies that use of the image is allowed on Wikipedia, as long as the publisher owns the copyright, which I do, since I made the photos myself. --Neep 07:10, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I am afraid that you have been mistaken. See Wikipedia:Copyright FAQ and Jimmy Wales' e-mail in which he has prohibited use of images under non-free (non-commercial use only etc.) licenses. - Mike Rosoft 20:17, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
Fushimi Inari Shrine
[edit]I noticed your photo on the Kyoto page, and was intrigued enough to post it as a candidate for Featured Picture status. It's currently under discussion on Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Kyoto Fushimi Inari shrine, and getting a lot of support.
I may have inadvertently offended you by following the request of another user to crop the black border (including the credit and copyright notice), so that users could vote on an image in a more traditional format. I apologize for this, and did not realize the possible offense — the previous user made it seem as if the GDFL notice was sufficient to give me permission to edit in this way, but apparently it doesn't. The source page still gives your name, and obviously, you posted the image to Wikipedia to allow its use on any page, but that doesn't necessarily give the right to tamper with your vision. For that I apologize.
I do think it's a terrific image. I also posted it (in its cropped format) to the page saluting Christo's "The Gates". The Fushimi Inari Shrine was, to my eye, an obvious inspiration for that recent project.
If you were to go to the candidate page and post your own comments, I am sure it might help clarify the controversy. I'm not sure there is a controversy, so long as you think the nomination is a good idea in the first place. I think the cropped version would be more easily supported by most people (and remember, the source page still acknowledges you). But again, it's your call. Your positive words might indeed encourage others to post messages of support. Again, my apologies for any offense, and thanks —Sandover 06:09, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Hi Sandover, I've replied to the matter on the Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Kyoto Fushimi Inari shrine page. Thanks for the heads-up, I feel honoured to be nominated! --Neep 07:03, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:AmsterdamGayPrideCanalParade.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:AmsterdamGayPrideCanalParade.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).
The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}
.
Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or ask for help at Wikipedia talk:Image copyright tags. Thank you. -- Carnildo 13:01, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
This image was created by myself. I have not been on Wikipedia for a while and am sorry to see it was deleted for the above reasons. I will take more care to note my own copyright in the future. --Neep 02:01, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:TokyoSetagayaMcDonalds.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:TokyoSetagayaMcDonalds.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.
If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either
- make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
- Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-enwikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.
If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-enwikimedia.org.
If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy.
