Location and other Brentwood Schools
[edit]Where is it?
[edit]But *where* precisely is it?!? Kaijan 14:16, 20 Aug 2003 (UTC)
- Brentwood School is in Essex (East of London) in England. I am a current student :).
Brentwood School Los Angeles
[edit]Why did someone remove the reference to Brentwood School in Los Angeles? It is a very prominent school as far as who its students are and well known in the US, so why was it deleted? I understand if someone wishes to create a new page for it, but seeing as this is the only place it merits placement, why was it removed?
- Because it doesn't go here at all: this page is titled "Brentwood School (Brentwood, England)", Brentwood Scool, Los Angeles is not in Brentwood, England! Joe D (t) 08:24, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- However, Brentwood School, which redirects here, could be made into a disambiguation page, with all the links to it changed appropriately. --rbrwr± 08:30, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- The problem is that this page has been moved to a more specific title, but with the simpler title left as a redirect. If it had been left at Brentwood School there would have been no problem with covering both school. If it had been disambiguated properly there would have been no problem. This was a half measure that was uncalled for and has caused problems.
- A page for Brentwood School in LA exists at: Brentwood School (Los Angeles). Could someone make a disambiguation page for these two schools when one goes to "Brentwood School" itself. --CunningLinguist 07:49, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Brentwood School is now a disambiguation page for Brentwood School (Brentwood, England) and Brentwood School (Los Angeles). --rbrwr± 09:52, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Alumni
[edit]Penny Rimbaud
[edit]In the Book "The Story of Crass" it says that Penny Rimbaud was a peer of David Irving at school, would that be this school? He's not in the Old Brentwoodians list —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.46.25.42 (talk) 22:20, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- Possibly because he was expelled? - although Keith Allen was also expelled, and possibly Robin Day?
Have added him in.Arjayay (talk) 10:09, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
Spoof?
[edit]There are at least two notable old Brentwoods who seem probable spoofs - does anybody have any way of substantiating:
- James Stephen Welham (1983-) England and Essex County cricketer
- Charles J. Kortright (1871-1952), cricketer Essex County Cricket Club
DaveK@BTC 10:22, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
Robin Day
[edit]I have deleted Sir Robin Day from the list of Old Brentwoods. According to Who's Who, he was at Bembridge School. Millbanks (talk) 22:49, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
- The schools own website [1] lists him as a pupil from 1934 - 1938
Arjayay (talk) 09:07, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Additions
[edit]Added Jake Maskall, James Stallard to old brentwoods. Anyone got any information on the school's connections to Freemasonry? 82.8.79.140 (talk) 09:24, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- Removed James Stallard - not on Architects Registration Board list, so not an Architect. Google search gives several James Stallard - unclear which he is, or if/why he is notable.
Jake Maskall needs citation to verify his attendance in his article. Please see "WP Requirements for Alumni" below.
Arjayay (talk) 10:09, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
WP Requirements for Alumni
[edit]Wikipedia:WikiProject Schools/Article guidelines#Alumni states:-
- "... alumni need a citation to a) to verify that they did indeed attend the school, and b) to verify the statement of their notability in their short one or two line description. When alumni have their own articles in mainspace, it is not necessary for their notability to be referenced, as long as it is done in the biographical articles."
So, Alumni with blue links can stay, provided there is a verification of attendance in their main article.
Alumni without blue links need to have a) a WP:RS that they attended and b)that they are notable.
I will search for these, before removing any names, but this will take some time.

Year of Foundation
[edit]There is some confusion about the year of foundation, and the schools anniversaries. I checked with the school (original research - very naughty) who replied on 20 May 2009:-
- "You are quite right. There is confusion about the year of foundation of the school. The school celebrated its 350th Anniversary in 1907 and its 400th Anniversary in 1957. We therefore took the view that the 450th Anniversary should be celebrated in 2007. Queen Mary certainly granted Antony Browne his licence to found the school in 1558 so, strictly speaking, the year of foundation of the school is 1558."
Arjayay (talk) 08:49, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
Notability of Recent Events and Current Staff
[edit]Given the school's over four hundred years of history, I query whether an encyclopaedia article should be listing current members of staff and recent artistic or sporting achievements. A performance of "My Fair Lady" or victory in a soccer competition in the last couple of years might serve promotional purposes for the school and its pupils, but I am not clear why they are more notable in an encyclopaedia entry than, say, a bit of Shakespeare in 1883 or a good performance by the cricket team in 1924. Similarly, why are the current heads of house more notable than past heads of house?

Copy Edit
[edit]I've completed a copy edited of this article. Clearly, much of the article was written by pupils at the school; I have no objection to that – indeed, I'm totally in favour of it; it's like totally cross-curricular, man! My only qualm is that I suspect that the headmaster of the school involved might be as shocked as was I by the tenuous grasp of grammar exhibited by some of his pupils...
The biggest problem with the article is not the poor (absence of?) SPaG, though; it's (as ever on Wikipedia) the lack of citation. I'm not able to reference in detail at present since I'm in the midst of an extended "house move" and all my books are boxed in other people's attics. I have found the best refs I can online, but they're not great. The OBs section is particularly thin. Having a link to a WP article is, to my mind, evidence enough of someone being notable, but there is seldom evidence that these people actually attended the school. The worry is that we link to WP articles and assume that's it; in reality we're linking to articles which are also lacking refs. How do we know Dr Bilge was truly a pupil at Skanksville College in 1822? Because his biography says so? That biography, though, is too often an uncited article on WP. (Wicked creature that I am, I'm sometimes tempted to link the personal biography's claim that "our person attended this school" to the school's claim that "our school educated this person"...) It's not a problem when the biography of the individual is fully cited, of course, but that is too seldom the case.
When editing obscure schools in the back of beyond, I'm used to the difficult of finding decent refs. (I've just edited articles of two schools in the Subcontinent for which I cannot find any reliable reference at all online; for one of them, I can't even find substantive evidence that the school actually exists!) For schools such as Brentwood, though, there must be - there are - reliable refs out there. Will somebody please join me in trying to get them recorded on WP, if only by ref to an obscure book published by a Deputy Under Sub-Master in 1916? Thanks and bless you all!
