Fire
[edit]Where should I put the section on the massively ironic fire that just took out half the commercial district? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.232.156.248 (talk) 15:04, 16 November 2011 (UTC)
Pop Culture References
[edit]It's been a year since the motion to clean these out was posted. Let's get them out of there. Sterlingjones (talk) 19:34, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
Removed Redirect
[edit]I have removed the redirect link from this Talk page to Talk:Cherry Grove, New York, as they are still two separate articles that have not been merged. Also, the article for Cherry Grove, New York is up for accuracy dispute, therefore a merge is not possible until that is resolved. -- Emana 09:58, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
Hurricane of '38
[edit]The '38 hurricane was pretty massive in Fire Island history. I'll write up a proportionately-sized section for the article! Cheers. -- User:RyanFreisling @ 05:46, 31 August 2007 (UTC) What about the flood that was more recent?
1892
[edit]14th_Regiment_(New_York_State_Militia)#After_the_American_Civil_War mentions the Fire Island "quarantine disturbance". Any info? Jim.henderson (talk) 14:50, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Two subjects dilute facts
[edit]This article attempts to discuss the island and the CDP simultaneously. As a result, it appears that some facts are about the island whereas some are about the CDP, and the distinction between the two is not always made clear. Additionally, attempts have been made to show the population and land area figures for the island using census data for various places, which I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) could be construed as synthesis? --JBC3 (talk) 01:18, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Appropriate Picture?
[edit]Is this really an appropriate picture for this article? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Oceanside_beach_on_Fire_Island.jpg —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.50.91.41 (talk) 00:30, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
No, it is not. Not at all. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.117.159.226 (talk) 19:20, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
FIRE ISLAND IS A GREAT PLACE TO BE WITH CHILDREN —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.193.142.122 (talk) 19:41, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
Official name.
[edit]Current lede: "What is popularly known as Fire Island (officially known as The Great South Beach[citation needed] - East and West Fire Island are smaller islands found in The Great South Bay between "Fire Island" and Long Island)".
I can't readily verfiy this; in fact, googling on the term makes it seem rather unlikely. On the basis of extraordinary claims requiring at least some sort of evidence, I propose to remove this entire digression, unless it can be sourced. In fact, even if it does have some sort of basis in fact, it seems unlikely it deserves anything like this sort of prominence, and would be better mentioned later in the article. 84.203.34.55 (talk) 11:45, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Good catch. I restored the April 18 correct lead. This erroneous edit was done April here. The Great South Bay concept is factually wrong on so many levels including the fact there are several bays along Fire Island.Americasroof (talk) 14:27, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. It looked like a poor edit to me, and I did also notice it was relatively recent, but I couldn't entirely rule out it was defensible on some theoretical basis. 84.203.34.55 (talk) 21:42, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
2009 renourishment
[edit]I just added a section on the effects of Sandy. The 2009 beach renourishment program helped spare the island. I think that renourishment section (which is unreferenced) should probably be nuked as it gives a lot of unnecessary information. If nobody comes forward to save it I will make adjustments to it greatly reducing it.Americasroof (talk) 03:34, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
