Misattribution
[edit]I believe that the attribution to Moon Unit Zappa of the title 'Ship Arriving Too Late To Save Drowning Witch' is erroneous. If I recall correctly, the cryptic drawing which appears on the album's cover is a 'droodle' by Roger Price, the 1950's humorist who created the genre, and the title is his as well. (A droodle is a simple drawing which cannot be interpreted without its caption.)

- I agree with you, I have never seen any evidence that Moon came up with the line. It's the original caption for the droodle. --plattopus (talk) 05:53, Mar 7, 2005 (UTC)

frank or moon unit?
[edit]As written: "'Valley Girl' was Frank Zappa's only top 40 hit in the United States..." Is this a typo? Should it say "...Moon Zappa's only top 40 hit..."? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hermitage (talk • contribs) 19:42, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- As far as I know, she had no part in writing the song itself, and only performed the monologue. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.137.89.148 (talk) 19:37, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
- According to a Frank Zappa biography I read, the idea for the song was her's, but based on the monologue she sings, all the music was Frank. It was his only top 40 hit anyway regardless. Anoldtreeok (talk) 07:58, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
I just wanna say
[edit]This is a wonderful wikipedia article. It's brief. It's concise. It's readable. It has no superfluos stuff. It has an appropriately brief mention of trvia about her name instead of a dopey list of three dozen video game references. I like it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ronstew (talk • contribs) 05:12, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
About her book
[edit]Maybe she is a prophet..? If the book was published september 11, 2001, and it is based on the events at 9/11.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by El Mantícora (talk • contribs) 16:21, 19 October 2006 (UTC)
Image?
[edit]Can anyone get a hold of an image of Moon? It'd be useful to associate an image with the "valley girl". — SheeEttin {T/C} 23:46, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
- It's not difficult to find some through Google, but unfortunately Moon Unit Zappa doesn't look at all like the stereotypical Valley Girl. By the way, boy are you people on the ball! I just came to correct the Austin Powers reference (to "Moon Unit Alpha") and saw that it had been fixed before I could. - Noc — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.139.126.34 (talk) 21:03, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
- FWIW, I was told by a woman who was a classmate of Zappa's at the time the song came out that Zappa was imitating other students at her San Fernando Valley school. There was apparently a negative reaction from her peers because she was perceived as lampooning them publicly. So it would not be correct to see Zappa as a protypical Valley Girl any more than it would be correct see Stephen Colbert as a typical right-wing TV host. ·:· Will Beback ·:· 20:56, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps we could find an image less than 20 years old? Buzzbo (talk) 01:39, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

like?
[edit]Just because Moon uses the word "like" in the single doesn't necessarily mean that the song is the source of the word "like" in the American lexicon in its current form. That's a gigantic leap of logic (especially considering the song is already BASED on an American pseudo-dialect that existed independently from Moon). Valley Girl did not put "like" in the lexicon. It *might* have put it into popularity nation-wide, but even that is pretty questionable considering the word was already being tossed around in at least one part of the country before the song's release. There could have been millions of other things that caused the word to spread across the country, including the real life "valley girls" themselves. At the very least, that claim needs to be sourced here, and it's not. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.253.107.192 (talk) 02:59, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
Moon Unit?
[edit]So what's a "moon unit"? Does that mean anything? Cool name though. Maikel (talk) 00:00, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
- -Check out her sister's name! Diva Thin Muffin Zappa! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.216.41.56 (talk) 01:08, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
- Zappa said "Moon" is a common name for females in other cultures, and obviously in other languages. "Unit" was intended as her middle name, representing a "technical" description of her place in the family. Viriditas (talk) 04:04, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
- Where did she say this? I would like to cite a source for the statement in the article re. "Unit" as middle name. Mike R (talk) 20:07, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

-- If her name is "Moon Unit Zappa", then her middle name is Moon. Why would any further citation be needed? What other reasonable interpretation would there be? Her surname is Zappa. She is generally know by her first name and her surname: Moon Zappa. Sometimes, her middle name is used as well: Moon Unit Zappa. This is totally ordinary and unexceptional. No citation is necessary. Her two given names are unusual, but their usage as "first name" and "middle name" are not noteworthy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.68.134.1 (talk) 17:31, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
- It's good to mention that, because "Moon Unit" sounds like a two-part first name instead of a first name and a middle name. Although no one was asking for a citation on that, just the part about the intention behind the middle name that Viriditas mentioned. - Last username left (talk) 10:43, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
There are plenty of videos of that interview on Youtube where he says what Viriditas mentioned. Like this one Bunny99s (talk) 16:01, 28 April 2018 (UTC)
wasn't "moon unit" already in the lexicon for the landing rover or somesuch? perhaps having come from some earlier scifi film?
moreover, SNL's "parental unit" predated this song, no? that proved popular in slang nationwide.
so it is insincere to claim "unit" as a middle name. it is clearly a compound first name. 2601:19C:527F:A660:DF2:5F76:A560:FC6F (talk) 22:19, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
Ancestry
[edit]Quote: Zappa's father was of Sicilian, Greek-Arab and French descent and her mother was of Danish, French, Irish and Portuguese ancestry
Aha! So she's a Sigrearfredafreirish. I knew it! It's written all over her. I'm not a racist, and count many Sigrearfredafreirish among my friends, but between you and me, keep away from the Sigrearfredafreirish. They're no good. Maikel (talk) 07:27, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
