[edit]I would like to point out that the annonymous editor to this page is Andy Mabbet, the only guy I have ever met to hold such a grudge against Birmingham, so much so that he scoured through brum, pages listing it as copyright violations (even if a few sentences in an entire article were knicked), I abided by the rules and removed the violations and now he manipulates the temp pages to try and somehow show the article in a negative light, very, very sad indeed Andy, get a life mate.
- I'm under no obligation to explain this edit, but for once I will in the hope of you seeing why people edit your text. Fundamentals: Wikipedia requires Neutral point of view, and an aspect of this is to Wikipedia:Avoid peacock terms: i.e. hyped language. On that basis:
- Thomas Ridgway was Birmingham tradesman who specialised in the import and sale of Tea during the early 19th century.
- He wasn't exclusively a Birmingham tradesman; he traded in London too. "Birmingham-born" would be fine if we had a verification. Since there's currently none, "a tradesman" sticks to the known facts. It's also worth mentioning that he also sold coffee and spices, as the Times display ad verifies.
- Pioneer = peacock term, making tea trading sound intrepid and macho.
- Ridgway continued his trade in Tea later paying back the money he had initialy borrowed from his creditors.
- Much of that is unnecessary. Creditors = people you owe money to. It doesn't mean you borrowed money from them.
- Ridgway was interested in keeping his products fresh and clean and so became one of the earliest English tea companies to prepack tea hygienically, the purpose being to avoid contamination.
- Without a verifiable source, Ridgway's precise motives are conjecture. But what is on record is that the big deal with the tea and coffee trade in the mid-1800s was deliberate adulteration - as mentioned at [1] and in Ridgways own comments in The Times - crooked grocers mixing loose tea/coffee with floor sweepings, and that looks the main reason for pre-packing.
- In 1876 Queen Victoria was so impressed by the House of Ridgways that she requested a blend be created for her personal use. This gave birth to Her Majesty's Blend.
- Hype. Unless there's documentation of her saying "We are most impressed", it's conjecture why the deal was struck. So just report the fact neutrally.
- On that basis, the edit you reverted was perfectly reasonable. This is the type of reasoning that goes on behind the scenes of edits. But life is too short to post such detailed explanations for every edit. All that Wikipedia requires is an edit summary, and you really have to trust that most edits are done for good reason (which is anyway verifiable when the edit introduces cited sources).
- As to the copyvios: whyever do you introduce them in the first place? You say you know copyright - so make sure copyrighted text is avoided from the start. Using texts then saying "hey let's sort out the copyright later" is bound to run into trouble. It would also help if you cited sources as part of your working process; you presumably have them handy to be able to write the document. RayGirvan 11:27, 31 May 2005 (UTC)
- Ray, let me explain why you and or? Andy Mabbett find such conflict whenever we meet.
- A perfect example: I'm under no obligation to explain this edit, but for once I will in the hope of you seeing why people edit your text. ~ You see Ray, childish little comments like this get my back up and rather than me actually looking at what you are editing I simply read you as a condesending idiot with little or no respect for my work, through this red mist I often overlook whatever it is you are actually doing, try and explain things in a less sophomoric manner and we could actually get on for the good of my articles you so enjoy editing.
