2002
[edit]Should someone not change this page so it refers to the year the award ceremony was held rather than than the year before? Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi won the award in 2002! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 83.71.26.111 (talk • contribs).
Intro a bit harsh
[edit]The introductory paragraph for this page seems to be rather harsh. Granted, the Japanese Academy Awards have received criticism, but the same is true for virtually every major Awards ceremony world wide. Considering how small the article is in the first place, I think that the introduction should simply be reduced down to the bare facts, as the table showing past winners is the most important feature. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Gunstar Hero (talk • contribs).
Move needed
[edit]The suffix (film) is used for articles on films. Would it be convenient to move this page to Japan Academy Prize - Film? Hoverfish Talk 20:44, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, "(film)" should definitely be removed. However, I am unsure how to go about doing this, as a huge amount of pages link to the current title.

- Also, the Japan Academy Prize page is currently a disambiguation page. With Imperial Prize of the Japan Academy and Japan Academy Prize (academics).

Japan Academy Prize (film) → Japanese Academy Award — I did a English language Google search and Japanese Academy Awards is more common by roughly 2000 percent. I realize they use Japan Academy Prize on their website but that's clearly Engrish and WP:NC(CN) favours what it's called by the English-speaking world. Doctor Sunshine talk 01:12, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

I think today's change in the lead to "often incorrectly called the Japan Academy Awards or the Japanese Academy Awards" is a little harsh. The official name is Nippon Akademī-shō, which can be translated as the Japanese Academy Awards. According to my search, 19 out of 20 people agree. This is how words and terms develop, lots of people using them. It's firmly established and Japanese Academy Awards can hardly be considered wrong. Here's a selection of external links using the term, the first two are directly from this article:

- I disagree that "Japan Academy Awards" or "Japanese Academy Awards" aren't wrong, as the site clearly indicates they call it a prize. Yes, "shō" can be translated either way, but when the group itself indicates a specific title as being correct (an English title, even), that necessarily makes all the others incorrect. I've removed the "incorrect", however, since it seems to be ruffling some feathers. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 05:05, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
I've removed my oppose vote but can't quite bring myself to support the article renaming. Japan Academy Prize seems to be, for better or worse, the official name. I do agree that the wording in the article should be changed to something more like "often referred to as the Japan Academy Awards or the Japanese Academy Awards", since that appears to be factually accurate. Perhaps we can list some of those external links as references to this point. BilabialBoxing 04:19, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
- The only thing I can add is that the official US government website announces itself as the USA vs. our United States, and the American Heart Association calls it a heart attack vs. our myocardial infarction. Just because http://www.japan-academy-prize.jp/ uses Japan Academy Prize doesn't mean we have to—in fact, we don't. Also this page had been listed as Japanese Academy Awards since August 2003 without any problem and was only moved two months ago (my proposed move drops the "s" in keeping with Academy Award). Doctor Sunshine talk 21:26, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- Actually, stumbled on a couple more things, here's another New York Times article listing the Japanese Academy Awards as being explicitly based on the Academy Award. And if you do a Google search for 日本アカデミー賞 and translate the Japanese Wikipedia page (3rd result down), the article confirms this and the is title translated by Google as "The japanese Academy Award".
- To muddy the water a bit, Donald Richie's Tokyo Story: The Ozu/Nodo Screenplay uses Japan Academy Award. Jim Breen's WWWJDIC Server translates it as Japan Academy Award.
- While about half of the search results for "Japan Academy Prize" seem to be for the Japan Academy Prize (academics),[1] which is a separate organization and again raises the issue of WP:NC(CN), specifically "Except where other accepted Wikipedia naming conventions give a different indication, use the most common name of a person or thing that does not conflict with the names of other people or things". Doctor Sunshine talk 20:38, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
Godzilla nominated for Best Picture
[edit]From what I understand, godzilla was nominated for Best Picture in 1954 but lost to Seven Samurai? Atleast according to IMDB. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.25.18.155 (talk) 08:27, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
So who won the 2020 best supporting actor awards?
[edit]Eiga.com says (according to my machine translation, if I'm reading it right; I don't read Japanese) that at the 43 awards in 2020, ATasuku Emoto won Best Supporting Actor category (and Masaki Suda was nominated in the Best Actor category).
But for one thing the 43rd awards were in 2019, 2020 was the 44th awards (according to this article). So maybe that source is sloppy and useless? But this article, for some reason, doesn't say who won the 2020 Best Supporting Actor category. The rows don't line up for 2020, and it looks like Midnight Swan won for Best Animated Work, but that film is not animated, so it's hard to tell what's going on. Is there a better source for this info? Herostratus (talk) 17:55, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
