External link symbol
[edit]Is there anyway to program this template to eliminate the external link symbol (featuring an arrow coming out of a little box) that follows it? It can cause display problems when the template is used in the body of article text (such as a paragraph) or in an infobox. — Eoghanacht talk 15:23, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, see {{ed}} for an example of this. However, it is an external link in this case . . . Srl 02:51, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
Minutes and seconds symbols
[edit]I might be incredible old-fashioned, silly or just wrong, but I prefer to use the following symbols for degrees, minutes and seconds:
degrees: ° or ° and not º
minutes: apostrophe or ' and not ´, ′ or &#prime;
seconds: " or " and not “, ″ or &#Prime;
For testing purposes copy and paste to e.g. Google Earth and look at the difference.
Is it possible to implement this in the template for future use.
Gemsbok2 13:00, 6 April 2006 (UTC-1)
The correct HTML entity to use for minutes is ′ or ′
The correct HTML entity to use for seconds is ″ or ″
•DanMS 01:31, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
You are right, but the above symbols seem to create space immediately to their right, which leaves a rather annoying kind of asymmetry. The 180 and 147 symbols did not do this. Do you know how to prevent 2032 and 2033 from doing this, or perhaps most people not care about the asymmetry? Viewfinder 03:00, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- I don’t see the gap on my computer (Mozilla Firefox on Windows XP, both at home and at work). That could be something unique to a particular browser/operating system, or combination thereof. Have you heard from any other users with the same problem? Try the HTML entities page on my website [1]. You can click on any HTML entity and it will show you the spacing associated with the particular entity. •DanMS 16:49, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
- The coor template does not render in Firefox 1.5 on Mac OS X (10.4). I'm seeing something like: DD°mm________. (It looks fine in Safari on OS X and Firefox 1.5 on Linux.) --Gruepig 07:06, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
Gemsbok2 and DanMS: you have my sympathies, because I suffer from both of the same problems you do, but:
- If Google Earth can't accept the modern Unicode punctuation characters, it needs to be fixed. In fact, I reported this to them, and they replied saying they were aware of the problem, and are going to fix it in a future release.
- The annoying asymmetry is a browser-specific problem. (I see it too, in Firefox 1.5 under OS X 10.4.) Again, not a reason for Wikipedia not to use the correct characters.
I don't understand the problem Gruepig reported -- these templates display fine for me in that environment (well, except for the asymmetrical space). —Steve Summit (talk) 16:24, 9 June 2006 (UTC)

Dutch
[edit]When I click the coor dms link from geographical articles, for instance, from the bottom of Edessa, Greece, it takes me to a Map Sources "special page" with instructions in Dutch, even though this is English Wikipedia. It still works, but the instructions were in English until a few days ago. Art LaPella 19:57, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Line wrapping
[edit]Can somebody either unprotect this template, or make the following edit to the source:
[http://kvaleberg.com/extensions/mapsources/index.php?params={{{1}}}_{{{2}}}_{{{3}}}_{{{4}}}_{{{5}}}_{{{6}}}_{{{7}}}_{{{8}}}_{{{9}}} <span style="white-space:nowrap">{{{1}}}°{{{2}}}′{{{3}}}″{{{4}}}</span>, <span style="white-space:nowrap">{{{5}}}°{{{6}}}′{{{7}}}″{{{8}}}</span>]
This change prevents incorrect line wrapping when viewed using IE - the line can only be broken at the space. For more background to this issue please see:
If this is done we can avoid forking this template with a {{coor dms2}} version that has this modification and it can be put up for WP:TfD. Thanks/wangi 14:28, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
External link image
[edit]When viewing under IE if a coor dms splits over two lines then the standard link image is corrupted. Does anyone have a possible solution for this? One option is setting the class to class=plainlinksneverexpand
, but of course this removes the logo completely. Thanks/wangi 14:28, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
- Done.
—Ruud 15:15, 11 April 2006 (UTC)- This change falsifies the status of the external link it produces, making it appear to be an internal lk. This must be promptly and authoritatively justified here to prevent reversion.--21:08, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

spacing
[edit]Is there any reason for the spacing between minutes and seconds of arc to be so big?
Spiff 21:53, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- The spacing between the minutes and seconds looks very strange, and it is making the mountain infobox look ugly.
- Can we please set it back to the way it used to be? hike395 23:14, 10 June 2006 (UTC)
- Looks fine over here. There is no space between the seconds and the minutes, only a prime mark. Could you attach a screenshot? —Ruud 00:42, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
- In my browser -- and I'm sure I'm not alone -- the minute and second marks are (wrongly) displayed in a double-wide cell, giving the appearance of an extra space. This is a browser issue or an OS font issue, not a mediawiki issue. Here are three examples:
- |12°34'56"| (ASCII single and double quote)
- |12°34’56”| (Unicode "typographical" single and double quote)
- |12°34′56″| (Unicode single and double prime, aka minute and second marks)
- In my browser, I see extra spacing in the third form; it looks like
- |12°34'
- |12°34'
- And, of course, it's those single and double prime symbols that this template is (correctly) using.
- Are you using Firefox on a Mac, Spiff? That's what I'm using.
- Unfortunately, we need to live with this until the fonts are fixed; the coor templates are fine and shouldn't be changed.
- —Steve Summit (talk) 04:19, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
- What does it mean "until the fonts are fixed"? Could the template maybe specify a font that's standard across browsers/OSs? -- SatyrTN 17:03, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Please can Coor dm be edited to match Coor dms?
[edit]At present {{Coor dm}} is using the symbol 2032 for the minutes apostrophe, and it doesn't even display in Firefox under Windows. I would like it changed. So {{{1}}}°{{{2}}}′{{{3}}} {{{4}}}°{{{5}}}′{{{6}}} would become {{{1}}}°{{{2}}}′{{{3}}} {{{4}}}°{{{5}}}′{{{6}}}, as is already the case in {{Coor dms}}.
Cheers — SteveRwanda 09:39, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- Fixed. At least I think so, both worked fine on my computer and I have no idea why didn't work for you, as the two methods should be entierly equivalent? —Ruud 19:29, 30 April 2006 (UTC)

Template appearing on its own line
[edit]This template has suddenly started appearing all on its own line in articles. I find it disruptive, but I can't find anything in the template source code that could be causing this. Is this something in the template source code or a bug in Wikipedia? JIP | Talk 17:49, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Line breaking
[edit]Further to the section above about the co-ordinates breaking over two lines, can someone get around to implementing this? At the moment, the co-ordinates often break at inconvenient points when breaking over two lines, making it look very strange. Obviously this depends on individual screen resolutions and settings, but an example is Caroline Island where, for me, the break appears like this:
- 9°56′13.13″S
- , 150°12′41.40″W
This just looks weird. Inserting non-breaking spaces at the right points should solve this. Carcharoth 11:23, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry, but I've just changed your example article to use {{coor title dms}} instead - seem more appropriate! But I did test adding a nbsp, and it still splits on the space (see User:Wangi/test). Thanks/wangi 12:09, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
- How can you tell if it still spilts on the space? As far as I can tell (by inserting text before it until it reaches the end of the line in my browser), the nbsp has solved the problem. Carcharoth 16:00, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
- Use the page as a template in an article, for example: {{User:Wangi/test|9|56|13.13|S|150|12|41.40|W|}} which will result in wangi 16:05, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
- Spoke too soon... It doesn't! I guess we need to look at puttign the whole lot into a white-space:nowrap span? /wangi 16:09, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
... And it does appear to work - argh - I must have got mixed up earlier! Thanks/

I guess you are using Internet Explorer as it works fine in Firefox. I move the comma inside the no-breaking tags, does this fix the problem? Using a non-breaking space will prevent breaking the line entirely, which I don't believe is a wanted side-effect. —Ruud 00:25, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Template not working

- The move to use Google Maps is temporary, I hope? I really liked being able to choose the map source (I used Topozone all of the time) hike395 04:24, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
Strong objection to making this point at Google maps
[edit]Can anybody tell me why this template has all of a sudden been changed to point at Google's rather poor resolution streetmap site. The previous target allowed the selection of mapping appropriate to the target and required usage (for example to select a decent topographic map, or even to start up Google Earth), and was much preferrable to this approach. All the change history says is changing to google maps, problem with previous link. There is nothing there or here to detail the problems, or any other reasons for this massively retrograde step. Can somebody please explain, and give some kind of a timetable for reinstatement. Failing that, could someone with admin privilege please revert the change. -- Chris j wood 19:51, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry for not making the reason for change clearer. The old link (where you could choose your map source) is broken (hopefully temporarily, as was producing this message when accessed:
Warning: main(../../wiki/includes/Defines.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/egil/public_html/extensions/mapsources/index.php on line 40 Fatal error: main() [function.require]: Failed opening required '../../wiki/includes/Defines.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/egil/public_html/extensions/mapsources/index.php on line 40
- to counter this temporarily I changed the link to Google Maps. When the link is working again (try this basic link with no parameters: http://kvaleberg.com/extensions/mapsources/index.php?params=), contact me or place {{editprotected}} on this page and it can be reverted. —Mets501 (talk) 20:02, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

- so ugly, I prefer to link to google maps immediately. 82.210.118.209 16:40, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
- I agree that the new pages are ugly. But changing back would be to put presentation before functionality; Google's maps (more street plans than proper maps) are simply not appropriate for many uses. What would be really great would be to incorporate the functionality previously provided by kvaleberg and now by magnus into WP itself; then we could fix the the presentation issues ourselves. -- Chris j wood 18:44, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

Geo microformat
[edit]It would be good if the WSG84 longitude and latitude co-ordinates in Template:Coor d could be presented using the Geo microformat in the mark-up. All that is required is for (using Coleshill, Warwickshire as an example) the HTML output:
<span title="Maps, aerial photos, and other data for 52.499° N -1.708° E"> 52.499° N -1.708° E</span>
to become:
<span class="geo" title="Maps, aerial photos, and other data for 52.499° N -1.708° E"> <span class="longitude">52.499</span>° N <span class="latitude">-1.708</span>° E</span>
with the addition of two spans and three classes. (Use of "Geo" on DM & DMS templates would require the replacement of the two inner spans with abbr elements, using the decimal values as the title attributes; I gather MediaWiki curently strips abbr elements?) Please let me know if you need further information. Andy Mabbett 09:12, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
- The would be nice, but longitudes and latitudes in this template are written in DMS notation, not in the decimal notation you seem to be needing for the geo microformat. —Ruud 23:16, 17 March 2007 (UTC)
- I specifically referred to Coor d, which, AIUI, uses degrees in decimal format. Is that not so? Andy Mabbett 23:41, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
I will try to do it, I think the DMS/decimal difference can be worked out using ParserFunctions. —Quarl (talk) 2007-03-18 03:31Z
- Take a look at {{coor/new}}. It would replace {{coor}}, {{coor d}}, {{coor dm}}, {{coor dms}}, and also emits geo microformat tags. MediaWiki doesn't support <abbr> tags so I put them inside display:none spans for now. —Quarl (talk) 2007-03-18 07:13Z
- Does it fallback correctly on non-CSS browsers (e.g. something like 10°23′31″ N 20°41′32″ W (10.391944, -20.692222) instead of 10.391944-20.69222210°23′31″ N 20°41′32″ W) and are all those meta-templates really needed (otherwise a fine piece of work, though.) —Ruud 14:05, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you! "diplay:none" seems a sensible, and effective, work around (especially as the DMS version is visible to the user). I would suggest that you give examples with named land-based locations (so that people can see the results in practice), and use a different one in each case, and give examples above and below the equator, and east and west of the GM. The CSS-free issue also needs attention; but should be easily solvable, and I'm really grateful for your prompt response. As an aside, does anyone know haw many times these templates are used, directly or indirectly? How soon might this new version be implemented? Andy Mabbett 23:52, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Thank you, that (without CSS) looks much better - perhaps a space, before the opening bracket, is needed? Would you expect such feedback here, or should I be watching elsewhere? Andy Mabbett 15:37, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- OK. The spacings better, thanks. I've changed your examples, as above, and exposed the markup using "nowiki". Hope that's OK. I think the fact that this allows entry and use of precise decimal values, while displaying more user-friendly DMS values is an added bonus. Andy Mabbett 10:36, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
- There being no dissent, can we roll this out, now? Andy Mabbett 01:47, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Icon
[edit]Should anyone wish to use a small icon for the Geo microformat, to alert people to its presence in infobox templates which use the above, there's one, freely available, at Image:Geo-microformat-button.png. It looks like this: and may be linked to Geo (microformat). Andy Mabbett 10:04, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think it would be a good idea to use this in article space. —Ruud 11:33, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Why not? Andy Mabbett 12:00, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- I could come up with a few arguments, the most important one being that it is not encyclopaedic content (even those featured article stars and links to portals, both more relevant than this geo icon, were quite controversial.) Others would be that some people might consider it to be spam, it would open up the door for loads and loads of other icons cluttering the article pages, there being other less intrusive ways to promote microformats, ... —Ruud 19:54, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- It's as encyclopaedic as "what links here" et al; it can hardly be spam if it links to an other article on Wikipedia or WikiBooks/ Wiktionary and less so than "powered by MediaWiki"; and it wouldn't be "promoting microformats", it would be promoting microformats on Wikipedia (and could link to a specific page for that purpose, instead of the generic article, if desired) - as a feature that WP provides which rivals do not. That said, an alternative might be to place it after, and inline with, text like "Coordinates: 52.530° N 1.928° W" in the top-right hand corner of pages such as Hamstead railway station; it's no more spam than the preceding "Coordinates" link. Andy Mabbett 20:59, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- You haven't argued what value the icon adds for a reader. Further more, I do not find the comparisons you make valid: the "what links here" link and friends and the "powered by MediaWiki" logo are not part of the article but of the interface; the "coordinates" label is a description of a piece of encyclopaedic content which might just as well be linked to an article which describes how to interpret that content, the geo icon does not describe encyclopaedic content but is meant to attract attention to some invisible feature. —Ruud 22:44, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- You haven't argued what value the icon adds for a reader - it informs the reader that there is a Geo microformat on the page, and invites them to find out what a microformat is, what they can do with them and where to obtain tools which will enable them to make better use of them. As such, it is directly analogous with the "coordinates" label - it is' a description of a piece of encyclopaedic content which might just as well be linked to an article which describes how to interpret that content. Andy Mabbett 22:57, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
I think the right place to have a link showing Wikipedia's support for the geo microformat would be on the geohack page. —Quarl (talk) 2007-03-27 11:13Z
- Indeed, but this isn't about "showing support", it's about advising users of a new feature. Andy Mabbett 11:16, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
- Which shouldn't be done in article space. I will construct an argument on why it is not directly equivalent to the coordinates label at a later time. —Ruud 17:38, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Is there any way to shorten the link?
[edit]I'm getting complaints about the use of this on Ridge Route: see Wikipedia:Peer review/Ridge Route/archive1. Is there a way to shorten the link, possibly make it read "maps"? --NE2 22:57, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- How about Swede's Cut, but with the external link icon having been replaced with a globe? —Ruud 23:28, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- That doesn't work, since it won't change if the "geohack" page moves. --NE2 23:30, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- I actually meant that a template could be modified/created to achieve this effect. —Ruud 23:43, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, yes. That would be useful. How about adding a "name" or "title" parameter to this? --NE2 23:50, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
34°37′01″N 118°42′03″W / 34.6170°N 118.7008°W (you might need to clear your browser's cache to see the globe.) —Ruud 00:13, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
