Le Zouave

[edit]

Added this section to include both responses...interesting, anyone else have more info?

This may be unfounded hearsay, but I was told a story about the history of the "zig zag man", and how he was supposedly the inventor of the modern cigarette.. Story goes a Zouave, a french musket infantryman in ww1 (?), was smoking a pipe while under fire and his pipe was hit by a musket ball. The zouave, in a cunning display of french ingenuity, emptied a paper cartridge (that's how bullets were made then I guess) and filled it with tobacco.. he then went on to become the first (registered?) trademark (trademark involving the bust of a spokesperson?) or some other far-fetched claim.. does anyone have any sources on this? I'm not sure on a lot of the details, and I'm not sure it belongs in an encyclopedia, but an interesting story nonetheless.

You or a friend probably read it off a pack of Zig-Zag's, as I did! The story of Le Zouave is purported as the origin of the cigarette only by the company itself; they reference the story on their home website as well, but you won't find it anywhere else. I'd like to include it here, even as interesting fiction associated with the product, but I don't think it really belongs. 131.107.0.112 (talk) 22:20, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Uncommon and hard to find? I don't believe this is accurate, as I've been smoking Zig-Zag on and off over the last few years. The only time I didn't find it, I asked the tobacco shop proprieter and he ordered it for me.

In which country is Zig Zag tobacco hard to find? I've never seen it myself but I would imagine that it would be more popular in some places than others. What are the four varieties? Aligma 23:47, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you even get Zig Zag tobacco in the UK, but we do get zigzag papers -- Sam.

No Zig Zag papers seen in Belgium, never before.

This paragraph, "Many artists and musicians, such as Eminem, have used Zig-Zag products in their art to represent cannabis consumption." Eminem and Zig-Zag, help me out, I can't find the art(cover).

Most Zig-Zag products arn't uncommon to find in Australia. The orange papers, the orange double packs, the red king size papers, i think there even slow burning papers and as well as the rolling machines. Never heard of their brand of Tobacco tho.
the references to Zig Zag by Eminem are in the song 'The Way I Am':
"I sit back with this pack of Zig Zags and this bag of this weed it gives me the shit needed to be the most meanest MC on this -- on this Earth" -1348- 17:36, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MADD Ad Campaign

[edit]

MADD (Mothers Against Drinking and Driving) has released a series of tv ads where various items tell "stoners" that they ought not smoke pot and then drive. One features a talking pack of Zig-Zags, with the Zouave on the cover telling a young man he's "way too high" to drive. I've been trying hard to find a reference to this... Anyone got a link? --Hiddekel 14:24, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HAHAHAHA that's ridiculous.--72.24.207.77 (talk) 03:14, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
How so? You condone impaired driving? Synetech (talk) 04:36, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

interleaving

[edit]

I removed the link to interleaving since it doesn't apply to this. Wiktionary has a fitting definition: "interleave: To intersperse (something) at regular intervals between the parts of a thing". I'd switch the link to go there instead, but i don't know if it's proper for a wikipedia article to link to wiktionary.. perhaps someone who knows for sure might want to do that, or (also?) clarify a bit more what interleaving is, as it pertains to rolling papers. 24.153.122.13 (talk) 19:17, 6 June 2008 (UTC) I MYSELF HAVE SMOKED JOINTS AND IT MESSED ME UP BAD. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.96.113.190 (talk) 01:15, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Primary Usage?

[edit]

I have only ever seen Zig-Zag used for marijuana. I know the product predates the craze for marijuana in the West, but I don't understand why anyone bought them. I used to roll my own cigarettes and would never use Zig-Zag, because they went out too easily. Since marijuana was much more expensive than tobacco back then, pot smokers liked that feature, because it reduced waste. So I came here wondering why Zig-Zag were developed to be so hard to use with cigarettes in the first place. Does anyone know? Bostoner (talk) 03:13, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have also only ever seen Zig-Zag used for marijuana, but that's probably because I never in my life knew anyone who (to my knowledge) rolled cigarettes. Two things occur to me 1) I have no recollection of joints going about by themselves (and, as far as I know, every joint I ever encountered was rolled with Zig-Zag papers), and 2) since probably most of us immediately think of marijuana when they think of Zig-Zag (since pretty much every marijuana user rolls and extremely few cigarette smokers do), there ought to be be some way of referencing marijuana in the article. Name

[edit]

Zouaves originate from Northwest Africa, where "zig" and "zag" are common phonemes in names. I think the product name is more likely a sort of nickname than a reference to the way the papers are arranged--or at least the term for such arrangement might have been inspired by Zouave names. Company representatives might want to avoid appearing racist and thus claim the name was only a description of the packaging method. They surely wouldn't say, "We used to call the Zouaves 'ZigZags' so that's what we called the man on the package," even if it were true. I think we are being given a politically-cleansed spin on the name, so I called for a citation.1canuckbuck (talk) 08:44, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well - according to what i've read, Zouaves didnt ORIGINATE in north Africa, they were french soldiers who primarily SERVED in North Africa, point being Zouaves arent africans they're frenchmen, so I dont buy the idea of politically correct spin. Alienburrito (talk) 19:24, 27 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

strangely phrased description.

[edit]

Cut and paste from the article as it currently stands:

"The Zig-Zag brand produces primarily hand-rolled tobacco related products such as cigarette marijuana, rolling papers, cigarette tubes and rolling accessories."

The company produces cigarette marijuana? and rolling papers? Is cannabis available ANYWHERE commercially?

I suspect that sentence was intended to read "....such as cigarette and marijuana rolling papers, cigarette tubes...."

THink i';m gong to change it if there are no objections...

[edit]

This entire article is advertorial in nature, obviously concocted and carefully stage-managed by one or more paid shills at "Turning Point Brands" in Louisville. Do you honestly think this makes your company look good? Or that people reading the WP entry about your firm do so because they want to buy something from you? LOL OMG.

Presumably said shill(s) will demand specific criticisms. OK. Here are some:

  • article lede is used to tell people the names of various wholesalers
  • no mention of "TPB" actually owning both the Zig-Zag trademarks and the manufacturing plant at Thonon-les-Bains
  • garbage refs for "Counterfeit Zig-Zags" section (soon to be deleted) which itself reads like what it is: A sop to $TPB shareholders...but this isn't The Motley Fool!
  • the exhaustive list of products is disgusting and blatantly violates WP:PROMO, particularly when atop of the main body of text

I could go on, but life is short. Stop it, you lecherous cretins. 76.69.87.171 (talk) 17:31, 29 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Zig-Zag is obviously no longer a company, and in fact, ceased to be one before WP even existed. The article should more properly be titled Zig-Zag (brand name), Zig-Zag (rolling papers), etc.
