Translation question

[edit]

This article says that Richard Philcox's translation is better-accepted than Constance Farrington's -- I'm just wondering if anyone has a source for this? I'm not disagreeing with the claim (I have read the entire book in the original, but only pieces of Farrington's translation and none of Philcox's). I'm just wondering what about Philcox's translation makes it preferable. Anyway, that's a claim that should be cited in the article. My rain face 09:21, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

At this date there may exist a preference for only late works of translation. Today the assertion concerning preference for Richard Philcox' translation remains un-supported by any citation. Regardless, and per evidence of consistent vandalism in edits of User:Codename news I’m reverting the nonsense of the last phrase of the article's penultimate line, added 31 July 2008 (here italicized):
"...the most recent, by Richard Philcox, is more well-received by scholars but widely regarded as major news by critics."
In reverting, I'm also simplifying the style to read: "The most recent Richard Philcox translation is better accepted among scholars." Note however, that in removing vandalism, I make no attempt to justify the statement or deal with the question of translation- a valid question which begs for some more informed answer. "We believe that the conscious and organized undertaking by a colonized people to re-establish the sovereingty of that nation constitutes the most complete and obvious cultural manifestation that exists."

'On National Culture' Addition

[edit]

Hi Editors,

I'm a student editor through the Wikipedia education initiative. I've made extensive additions to the article, creating a new section on the essay 'On National Culture'. As this is my first major edit, I'd appreciate any feedback, suggestions on how we could improve the section, or whether it truly belongs in this article.
